Introduction

Lighting the Stage for Experience.

An iconic public building in Wellington was to be reimagined as a versatile event space, capable of hosting intimate classical concerts, product launches, fashion events, and weddings.

The architectural character of the building was already strong and distinctive, requiring a lighting approach that would enhance rather than compete with it.

The ambition was clear, to create a flexible and atmospheric environment where light could adapt to each occasion while remaining visually discreet.

DISCOVERY & CHALLENGES

Balancing Character and Performance

The key challenge was to introduce adynamic and adaptable lighting system without compromising the integrity of the architecture.

The space demanded both visual comfort and sufficient illumination levels for public use, while allowing for moments of intimacy and expression depending on the event.

Avoiding glare and visible light sources was essential, ensuring that the focus remained on the space and the experiences it hosts.

Solution & Execution

Light as an Invisible key factor.

Light was carefully integrated into the architecture, allowing it to emerge from the building itself rather than from visible fittings.

Linear LED systems were concealed to softly wash walls and reveal texture, enhancing the unique features of the space. This ambient layer is complemented by discreet spotlights and in-ground uplighters, adding depth and subtle accents. Decorative glass pendants honour the classic character of the building while enabling dynamic lighting scenes.

A Casambi lighting control system allows the atmosphere to be shaped with ease, enabling venue managers to adjust scenes to suit each moment. The integration of RGBW lighting introduces colour as a subtle design tool, allowing the space to take on different identities and support more personal and memorable events.

Results

A Space That Adapts and Endures.

The building has been transformed into a refined and adaptable venue where light supports both function and emotion.

The architecture remains the protagonist, while light enhances its presence, providing clarity, comfort, and atmosphere.

From one event to the next, the space evolves seamlessly, with light acting asan invisible host shaping memorable experiences.
