Designed to evoke stillness and intimacy, this lighting concept weaves a soft trail through native bush. Each step is gently illuminated, offering guests a moment of calm as they move toward the spa sanctuary. A caring result where light becomes a quiet companion.
Nestled in the heart of native bush, in an area where a significant population of kiwi live, this gentle path weaves between rural accommodation and a series of secluded spas, inviting guests into a moment of stillness and retreat. The journey is an opportunity to reconnect with te taiao (the natural world), embracing the wairua (spirit) of the landscape.
This uneven illumination compromised both night-time legibility and guest comfort.
The client approached Inlucem not just to improve visibility, but to bring life to the space — to create an inviting and emotionally engaging atmosphere where customers could enjoy the experience to its fullest. There was a clear desire to elevate the path beyond basic functionality and make it an integral part of the evening wellbeing ritual.
Working within a tight budget, it was essential to retain the existing lighting infrastructure as much as possible, limiting new fittings and avoiding extensive upgrades.
The organic flow of the path that connected the spas held great potential. The bush formed a kind of living dome, embracing each step with its presence. It felt like a forest bath before the bath itself, gently immersing guests in the calm and vitality of te taiao.
Yet the experience lacked atmosphere. There was no spatial rhythm, no texture, and none of the natural features were revealed. As a result, the evening wellbeing ritual could not fully unfold. The lighting failed to reflect the mana (integrity and presence) of the site or create a sense of orientation, care, and emotional connection for visitors.
The path needed a gentler guidance, one that would allow the bush to come back to life through light, adding texture and depth to every step. Even the suggestive sculpture by a local artist — a presence that felt like the kaitiaki, the guardian of the forest, remained hidden in the dark, unnoticed, and unacknowledged. Its absence left the journey incomplete, missing the quiet sense of belonging that light could bring.
Working within a limited budget, it was essential to make the most of the existing lighting infrastructure. Rather than starting from scratch, we focused on upgrading what was already there.
One of the key adjustments was raising the height of the existing path fittings. This allowed for a gentler, more effective wash of light across the walking surface, improving visibility while reducing the number of fixtures needed. These upgraded fittings were then refitted with LED lamps, replacing the outdated halogen bulbs. The new light sources offered significantly greater energy efficiency, reduced maintenance needs, and a much longer life expectancy, all contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective system.
To elevate the user experience further, we introduced a new, complementary layer of light focused on the surrounding landscape. This gentle illumination brought the lush greenery back to life, adding texture, depth, and presence to the journey. Highlighting the sculptural work by a local artist, a piece that felt like the spirit of the forest itself, was essential. It now stands quietly illuminated, offering guests a moment of reflection and connection with the space.
The final result is a carefully balanced lighting experience that enhances both function and feeling. The pathway now offers safe and comfortable movement, but more importantly, it invites guests to slow down and become present, gently drawing them into the surrounding environment with warmth and care.
The bush reveals itself softly, with light accentuating its natural textures and forms, bringing a quiet sense of depth to the journey. The sculptural piece, once hidden, now holds its place with quiet dignity, offering a moment of stillness and reflection for those who pass by. What was once a dark and disconnected link between spaces has become an integral part of the wellbeing ritual, a calm and memorable transition that connects guests with the mauri of the place.
